
California struck gold at the California Wine Institute’s Eureka Trade Tasting on September 9th at Moonlight Studios in downtown NYC with its impressive showcase of sustainably produced wines from many of California’s top wine producing regions. In case you’re wondering why the name “Eureka,” the word is California’s state motto, and translates to “I have found it,” a reference to California’s era of prosperity at the onset of the Gold Rush in 1849.
It can be used to refer to the state’s many exceptional AVAs (American Viticultural Areas) that produce sustainable wines including:

The event was organized in cooperation with the food, wine, beverage, and spirits communications agency Colangelo & Partners and incorporated a series of seminars led by Elaine Chukan Brown, author of the Wines of California, a comprehensive guide to the state’s AVAs, its winemaking history, and its producers. The addition of a “Bubble Lounge” featuring sustainably produced California sparkling wines, and an eclectic spread of regional cheeses and meats to pair with the wines helped to make for a dynamic tasting experience.
California leads the world in sustainable winemaking, and the aim of the Eureka program is to increase the presence of sustainable California wines in the international market while raising industry and consumer awareness about the importance of sustainable methods of wine production in a world increasingly negatively affected by climate change. California wine producers also employ fair labor practices and wages as part of the sustainable winegrowing initiative.
The event gave both wine media and trade professionals and the public an opportunity to witness how California continues to pave the way towards a more sustainable and equitable approach to winemaking.
