September marked the annual Wine Enthusiast Sip of Italy event featuring a diverse array of Italian wines rated “Best Buy” and/or 90 points or higher by Wine Enthusiast from virtually every major wine region in Italy. The event, held at City Winery NYC at Pier 57, also featured Chris Leon (Owner and Wine Director of Leon & Son), Kenneth Crum (Managing Partner of Pearl Box), Mark Fornatale (Director of the Italian Portfolio at Skurnik Wine & Spirits), Danielle Callegari (Wine Enthusiast Tuscany and Southern Italy Wine Reviewer), and Jeff Porter (Wine Enthusiast Piedmont, Northern Italy, Slovenia, and Switzerland Wine Reviewer) in a panel discussion exploring the direction of Italian wines in the United States market and its place among the “new” generation of American wine consumers.
Over 90 wineries were present, giving wine media and trade industry professionals an opportunity to sample a diverse array of sparkling, white, rose’, red, and sweet wines. An appetizing buffet of Italian breads, cheeses, cured meats, and pastas were on hand to give attendees the opportunity to pair these wines with food.

The producers in the spotlight were as diverse as the wines that were poured. Centuries-old wineries like Duca di Salaparuta in Sicily stood alongside newcomers such as Cantina Ventiventi in Emilia-Romagna. A few of the many highlights from the event included Franciacorta from Ca’ del Bosco, and Berlucchi, Trentodoc from Rotari, whites from Cantina Bozen and Stemmari, and reds from Pasqua Vigneti e Cantine and Allegrini.
Wine Enthusiast Sip of Italy also welcomed the public to its consumer event where attendees sampled around 300 different wines while enjoying Italian fare prepared by Chef Joshua White.
