Expectations run high for a wine named Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (Noble wine of Montepulciano). Good thing this Sangiovese (Prugnolo Gentile) -based wine from the ancient Etruscan town of Montepulciano in Tuscany is everything a good red wine should be, and then some. Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is typically medium-bodied and structured, with firm tannins, a balanced acidity, and red berry, dark stone fruit, aromatic spice, and balsamic notes. Its bright strawberry, plum, cherry, and subtle pepper and herb flavor characteristics make this wine wonderful to imbibe young.
These properties continue to evolve with time, while its tannins grow rounder and smoother, making Vino Nobile di Montepulciano a remarkably age-worthy wine. Montepulciano’s topography ( verdant valleys, and rolling hills that can
rise to elevations between 250 and 600 meters above sea level ), and climate ( hot and dry summers, sun-drenched days, and cool nights ), as well as the sand and clay-dominant soil in its roughly 1300 hectares of vineyards have enabled this region to produce particularly fine wine.
The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG was established in 1980. All Vino Nobile di Montepulciano produced within the Montepulciano appellation must satisfy the following requirements to be labelled DOCG:
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has to consist of at least 70% Sangiovese, with permitted varietals (such as Merlot, Mammolo, and Canaiolo, to name a few) making up the remainder of blends.
A maximum of 8 tons of grapes per hectare can be planted, and wine production is limited to a maximum 70% of the total yield.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano must be aged at least 2 years before release. The Riserva requires an additional 1 1/2 years (including 6 months in bottle) before release.
The Consorzio del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was established in 1965. Its aim is to promote and preserve the quality and provenance (all Vino Nobile di Montepulciano bearing the DOCG label must have been produced from grapes grown within the Montepulciano appellation) of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. There are currently 270 members in the Consorzio representing almost the entirety of the area’s wineries.
In 2022, Montepulciano became the first region in Italy to receive Equalitas sustainability certification, demonstrating that Montepulciano stands at the forefront of progressive and environmentally-conscious winemaking.
Producers from Montepulciano came to New York City in May to showcase some of their elegant Vino Nobile di Montepulciano at Parcelle Wine Bar.
