Portuguese wine company Sogrape hosted a media event at Sahadi’s to celebrate the launch of the latest wine additions to their Silk and Spice line. Sogrape (Sociedade Comercial dos Vinhos de Mesa de Portugal) was founded by Fernando van Zeller Guedes and 15 others in 1942 with the objective of making wines that reflect the adventurous spirit of 15th century Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama and others who sailed around the Cape of Good Hope to discover the myriad flavors that can be found along the Silk Road.
Over 80 years and four generations later, Sogrape continues to bring exciting new flavors to distant lands across the globe. Silk & Spice represents one of 22 brands in the wine company’s portfolio. The 125-year-old Sahadi’s marketplace and purveyor of fine exotic spices was the perfect venue in which to debut the Silk and Spice collection. Abrahim Sahadi, an immigrant from Lebanon, founded A. Sahadi & Co. in New York City in 1898, and throughout its 100+ year history, it has continued to source high quality spices, grains, meats, and produce, as well as wines and spirits, to New Yorkers from all five boroughs. The New York City-based communications company Cork + Knife, and New York Chef Nini Nguyen teamed up with Sahadi’s to create a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern-inspired lunch that seamlessly complemented the Sogrape Silk & Spice wine collection. The afternoon included an exploration into the scent, texture, and taste of various spices that catered to virtually all the senses.
The fresh, smooth, and round character, as well as the balanced juicy fruitiness and delicate sweetness of The Silk & Spice wine collection make them very approachable, and ideal complements to an array of cuisines, ranging from Mediterranean and Middle Eastern, to East Asian and Latin American fare.
